Fix the install of Windows Security update KB956572

It seems that many people including myself are running into Windows XP, Vista, and Windows Server 2003 machines that are having trouble installing this update.

To solve the problem I gleaned a good bit of detail from searching the web. I then created a batch file called FixKB956672install.cmd

It contained the following lines:

REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL /S
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL /S
net stop WuAuServ
ren C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution SDold
net start WuAuServ

I then re-ran Windows Update and the update installed just fine.

Do I need a new processor for XP Mode???

With the information coming out about Windows 7’s ability to run XP applications in a virtual environment (which sounds awesome BTW) I was concerned that once again I would need to upgrade my PC or at least my processor since this new virtual XP Mode would need hardware virtualization which is only supported on certain AMD and Intel processors. Though this tool was not originally written to demonstrate this information it does it all so well, as most of Steve Gibson utilities do. Instead of googling the information and cross referencing charts you can just download the GRC application called securable to see if your current processor supports Hardware Virtualization. Thanks to Paul Thurrot for passing this information along during the Windows Weekly podcast http://wiki.twit.tv/wiki/Windows_Weekly_107 and to Steve Gibson for his wonderful utilities and super useful information he provides weekly during his podcast called Security Now……and yes my processor supports Hardware Virtualization.

Video: Montauk Monster

While viewing the video about China I could not help but take notice of the following video about the Montauk Monster. Why would such a thing catch my eye?

Well because a long time ago, on the Podcast we once did on a regular schedule – Greg and I discussed the Philadelphia Experiment

That bizarre topic has some strange and tangled connections to Montauk State Park, and the abandoned military base near there, AKA the Montauk Project. If you read deep into all the interesting stories about the military base and the theories surrounding it about a Stargate – yes a Stargate like as in Stargate SG1 – you will ultimately learn about a monster or monsters that supposedly made it through the Stargate to our world.

So I leave it to you dear readers – any connection?  Crazy ideas always welcome in the comments.

The unflappable hackable Mac

I keep hearing about a certain big box employee’s telling customers to by a Mac because it can NOT be hacked.  Well poppycock!  It may be a great machine and a worthy competitor to Dell and Windows.  But like most operating systems, it has its own issues:

Excerpted from iDefense:

iDefense Security Advisory 05.12.09

> May 12, 2009

> Local exploitation of an index validation vulnerability in Apple

> Inc.’s Mac OS X xnu kernel could allow an attacker to execute

> arbitrary code in the security context of the kernel.

> The Mac OS X xnu (Mach) kernel implements workqueues. This allows the

> kernel to schedule events to take place in a task. An input validation

> error exists within this implementation, which can lead to execution

> of arbitrary code in the kernel.

Please see iDefense for all the gory details and give some of those big box employees the evil eye!  :)
